Microsoft has issued a security update to deal with a vulnerability which could have lead to a global virus outbreak. They regard this as so serious that they've issued it even for XP computers which they stopped supporting in 2014.

The other Windows operating systems which could be affected where they've issued an update are Windows 2003, Windows 7 (I think that was included in the update they did yesterday), and Windows Server 2008.

Apparently 3.75% of desktop computers in use have Windows XP !

Oooo that’s sounds like it might be well dodgy I’m not on Microsoft , but I will tell anyone I know who is El

Ok in time honoured tradition . . . .

I've checked all my windows and they're securely locked

They were fitted by Everest so what Microsoft has to do with it is beyond me.

Mind you I have had some Asian sounding guy on the phone saying my "server was down" but my Mum has been fine and still supplying copious amount of tea and finger foods at regular times so i'm not falling for that.

What about us on 3.11?

Would the intel chip in that have the vulnerability in later chips?
Would the computer still be connected to the internet or would it be using external files created at the present time? If it's not connected and doesn't use current files, it would presumably be safe from an attack.

Apparently the vulnerability is in Intel processors made from 2011.

Thanks for the heads-up, El Loro: I’m on a β€œlong weekend” at the moment, but I expect to be thrown into the thick of it when I return to work on Tuesday!

We still use a lot of Win 7 computers and even a few XP laptops at work, because we’ve got several key S/W tools that we’ve been unable to update. The mainstay of our security policy is that they are NOT connected to the internet, but it remains a worry.
