I know the answer but the first person who invented didn't patent it...so I think we may have to give both answers and explain why...you're right Baz it wasn't Thomas Crapper

I think this is going to be a really difficult one, as the invention of a lot of these is disputed. 

 

For the record; Thomas Crapper didn't invent the flush toilet, but he did patent a lot of improvements - including the ballcock. Over to you, Stephen...

 

[BTW: Wiki disagrees with Stephen as to the Chinese being the first to invent it, with the ancient Orcadians going back over 5000 years!

I don't know what answer will be acceptable  Eugene.  Sir John Harington was the first to invent a flushing loo but never patented it.  Alexander Cumming  patented the flushing loo a couple of hundred years later...it's a complicated question indeed.
