New series to be shown later this year - looks as if there will be 8 1 hour episodes.

BBC One reveals a first look at the full judging line-up for Britain’s Best Home Cook, announcing that Mary Berry will be joined by Dan Doherty and Chris Bavin. Together they will judge the brand new cookery competition celebrating truly exceptional home cooks, and presented by Claudia Winkleman.

One of London’s most prominent and creative chefs, Dan Doherty is currently Chef Director at one of the city’s most celebrated restaurants, Duck and Waffle. Having started his career as a graduate of The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, Dan is known for his innovative, playful and indulgent cooking style, with a number of awards and accolades now under his belt. He recently released his second book focused on the recipes he cooks at home for family and friends. In his role as judge, Dan is on the hunt for inventive home cooks with hidden kitchen talents.

Former market trader Chris Bavin has worked in importing, wholesaling, retailing, food service and catering. Chris co-founded his retail business The Naked Grocer and has since gone on to TV success fronting a range of shows including Eat Well for Less,
Tomorrow’s Food, Food: Truth or Scare and The Truth about Meat.

First announced with Mary and Claudia last year, Britain’s Best Home Cook is a brand new competition that will see 10 passionate, skilled home cooks from across the country face a comprehensive range of culinary challenges from fabulous feasts to the nation's favourite dishes, and all things in between.

Mary Berry says: “It’s an absolute joy to be judging truly passionate home cooks with Dan and Chris. Like our contestants, we each have different backgrounds and ways of looking at food. I have to admit the boys have already taught me a thing or two!”

Dan Doherty says: “Right now British cuisine is more exciting and diverse than ever - we’re a nation of home cooks with different influences and hidden talents. In the competition I’m looking to discover which of our competing cooks has the technical ability and creative skill to deliver inspiring and inventive dishes. It’s a pleasure to be judging alongside Mary and Chris, and I can’t wait to taste what our cooks come up with.”

Chris Bavin says: “I’ve spent 20 years in food produce and know that a good understanding of ingredients will be key to giving us delicious dishes, but just as important is the ability to adapt and be resourceful - anyone who cooks will know that in a kitchen anything can happen!”

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content says: “A delectable trio of cooking talent has been chosen to sit at the top table to judge Britain’s Best Home Cook. Head judge Mary will be joined by two new men in the kitchen to put our cooks to the test: Dan’s skills and creative flair combined with Chris’ knowledge of family food are set to spice things up on BBC One. And with Claudia presenting, keeping them all in check, the competition looks to be an unmissable treat for everyone.”

Name of show edited to include the word Home - looks as if the BBC decided to change the name, probably to make it clearer that the contestants are home cooks rather than professional chefs.

Eve Pollard was as famous for her ample bosom display as she was for her reporting I remember. Quite glamorous in her hey day and camera ready - I think that's why she did so well .. same too for her expertise which were without question.

Winkleman has neither

Guess you can't be too negative towards someone's good fortune cos if it comes my way I'll grab it too.

It's just nepotism ... so unfair

Won't stop me watching though - hope it's good

I'll never forget David Starkey bringing that very point up with Victoria Coren and Dimbleby on Question Time. Their faces....

I had to watch it Velvet, priceless!

You could feel it simmering and then BOOM! it kicks off.

the word Nepotism comes from the Italian word nepos meaning nephew, Back in the Middle Ages some Roman Catholic bishops and cardinals (as they could not marry so would not have sons) made their nephews cardinals.

I think it likely that a lot of people have got Britain's Best Home Cook confused with the Big Family Cooking Showdown (which was on BBC2 rather than BBC1).

BBHC has the 10 contestants to start with, then 1 is eliminated at the end of each episode with 3 left by the final I think. They are cooking in one place which has been subdivided into small kitchens.

Each episode, the judges set a challenge to cook a home favourite - tomorrow it's the ultimate burger. The second challenge is a bit of an invention test - the judges  give two choices, the cooks who did best with the first challenge decide which of the two choices is chosen and then all the cooks have to cook something baed on that choice. The judges decide who has done best and go straight through to the next round. The others have to cook again with one leaving at the end.

So it's rather like Masterchef though with the emphasis on home cooking so the contestants closer to people who were in Big Family Cooking Showdown.

It was originally going to be called Britain's Best Cook but that's been changed to make it clear that the contestants are home cooks, not professional chefs.

A further note to my post above. With the second round (Cooks Challenge), the number of people who don't need to cook again as they've done well is not a set number. So it could be all of the contestants who have to cook again, or just a few.

The last round is called the Elimination Round. The judges will give the contestants a classic recipe which is detailed. The contestants won't know in advance what that it. They will be given the exact amount of ingredients, so there's no chance to redo the recipe if they mess up.
