It doesn't mention in the BBC article but Dick Van Dyke will be playing the part of Bert's son (he was Bert in the original). He says he will be singing and dancing in this sequel.

 

The screenplay is being based on the books by P L Travers and is written by David Magee who wrote Finding Neverland. It's directed by Rob Marshall whose other work includes a 1999 TV movie of Annie and also Chicago so he does have experience of direting musicals.

 

Mary Poppins is being played by Emily Blunt whose casting has been endorsed by Julie Andrews calling it a wonderful casting decision.

 

So although it's unlikely to be as magical as the original I woudn't write it off.
