It happened years ago but I remember it every time I go that particular route. Nowadays there is a 50mph speed limit on that stretch of road.

The trouble is, the nutters will drive as fast as they can get away with and not give a damn about who they maim....

Well done on getting the washing dried.

I'm glad the sofa and huge chair came early too.

Son called in tonight to ask if I could take him to the dentist tomorrow morning. He's getting knocked out while they remove a wisdom tooth and he isn't allowed to drive afterwards. Hopefully, it won't take too long as I have a new bed arriving at some point in the afternoon. I've told son I have logged all the favours I've done for him this week and will be calling them in at some point.

Good morning everyone, not a bad morning but not really sunny.  I hope all goes well at the dentist for your son Yogi, I didn't think they knocked people out anymore for tooth extraction.  I just had a local for the last time I had a back molar out.  I hope the bed arrives without delay and is just right for the room.

Time to get those shrubs out today, I have counted 6 that I think should go, and then it's a question of choosing the right replacements.  I went on a specialist rhododendron site but all the ones I liked were out of stock.

Have a good day everyone.

It's not a normal extraction. The tooth is a wisdom tooth and there isn't enough room for the tooth to come through the gum - it is trying to come out sideways! It is also pressing on a nerve, which is causing great pain. The dentist will need to lance the gum and remove the tooth then stitch the gum. I had the same done on one of my wisdom teeth, but they didn't knock me out - agony!

Choosing new shrubs - that's my kind of shopping.

Squiggle, I think dentists generally avoid giving general anaesthesia to patients. It would tend to be used when it's a very long operation lasting for hours, where the patient has some form of disability making it difficult for the dentist to operate with the patient awake, or where the patient has an extreme phobia of dentists. It's possible that Scotland has a different policy to England though.

By a coincidence jackassfan who generally only posts on the film section of the forum watched The Great Moment in the last few days. It's a 1944 fillm about Dr W T Morgan who was a pioneer in dental general anaethesia.

I have dropped him off. The dentist is in the village and the receptionist knows me, so she is going to phone when I have to go pick him up. He isn't allowed to drive for a while afterwards.

I'm not sure that it is a general anaesthetic he is having, although son used the term "knocked out". It is possible it is the same type of heavy sedation they give  me when I get colonoscopys done. You feel like you have been unconscious because you can't remember a thing, but apparently there is some level of consciousness, and you do "come round" much quicker than from a GA - one doctor descibed it as similar to Rohypnol, the date rape drug.

My brother had some teeth removed this week too, he's very sore bless him

Squiggle, how exciting, I hope you find some lovely new plants to fill the space I've got 2 little hebes and just love them

I think, depending on how much pressure they have to use to extract the teeth, your gum and jaw can ache for quite a few days. I hope your brother's mouth stops hurting soon.

I like hebes. I may need to buy one or two.

It was a bit of a shock at first, I thought all my shrubs would go on for ever but I am told they get woody so I am looking upon it as an opportunity instead and although the lady who planted the garden had loads of hebes (I still have a few) I thought a nice mix might be better.  It's acid soil here so camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas etc do well.  But there is a smallish hebe that does well in coastal areas and the nursery assures me they have a stock of those.  It is exciting, if daunting.

Yogi I was just thinking about my post earlier on.  I hope you didn't take offence at my saying your son needed his mum there, only that's how I feel.  If I am having something done like that it makes such a difference to come out to a friendly face, no matter how comforting the dentist is.  I know he needs you to drive him home but I am sure he needs you just as much to be 'there for him'.  I know I couldn't have got through chemo without my hubby being there by my side and I am always there when my grandson has his long dentist appointments.  His next one is 90 minutes long.

Of course I didn't take offence, Squiggle, I knew what you meant.

It's always a comfort to have someone close when you are having an unpleasant treatment.

I've just picked him up and he is lying on the couch with pillows and fleecy blankets - takes me back to when he was a wee boy.

I checked with the dentist and it was the heavy sedation I described earlier, rather than a GA, which was administered. He has been given antibiotics and painkillers and warned that it could still ache for a week or so.

Your poor grandson, a 90 minute dental appointment is not something to look forward to.
