Good morning everyone

Cloudy day here and a bit of rain during the nights. Weather forecast seems to be faurly unsettled for some days but the rain quantities din't seem to be a return to the very wet conditions we've been getting. The Environmental Agency is on the look out for flooding on the Severn locally. Although there has been flooding, that's been on areas which are known flood areas.

Yogi, I hope you had a better night's sleep

A Bronze Age stone cairn found in the Forest of Dean. First time anything like that found in the area. Nothing as spectacular as Stonehenge.:

Good morning everyone

A frosty start to the day - it does look pretty.

Squiggle, I think it is probably my body clock hasn’t caught up with the clocks going back. I was awake at 5am but I had slept for almost 8 hours so feel fine.

El, the cairn is a great find

Heading to Morrisons then ironing awaits.

Have a good day, all.

Good morning everyone

Yogi, happy shopping and I’m pleased to see you slept better

Cold and dry overnight. Still cold but we have had a light shower. More to follow later but the sun is just showing it’s face

Shopping done. Television license paid

So that’s me sorted for now

I hope you all have a good day

Back from walking to and back from the local Co-op. I felt like walking there rather than driving though there were spots of rain.

There's a memorial service this afternoon in church for a churchgoer I knew slightly. I'm not going as I know from previous experience with memorial services done by the current vicar that they are long - somewhere between 1.5 and 2 hours spent mainly in sitting on uncomfortable wooded pew seats then going over to the church hall for refreshments. Starts at 2.15, people won't get back home much before 6. (the funeral service was some weeks ago).

BBC article on how pianos became part of the furniture at UK railway stations:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-50158653

The article mentions British artist Luke Jerram. I've mentioned him before. He's the artist who created the Musuem of the Moon - the large replica of the Moon which tours the world. One of them is currently on display in Gloucester Cathedral to attract children on their half-term break this week.

The BBFC have launched their revised certificates logos as from today.

The main differences are that the old 12 logo for DVDs is replaced by the so much the same as the cinema 12A logo

and the old 15 logo which could be confused with the old 12 logo is now a more distinctive

Besides cinema and DVDs etc the ratings are likely to appear in streaming services - Netflix being the first to use them.

The oldest films shown with certificates on the BBFC site are dated 1 January 1913. Of the 16 such films, the only one with anyone of note in is a film called "The God Within". Blanche Sweet was one of the early silent film stars. Lionel Barrymore was also in the film (best known role was as Mr Potter in It's a Wonderful Life). Film was directed by D W Griffith, the first major American film director).

There's a brief clip from that film on Youtube. Poor condition and of little interest other than historic:

El Loro

D W Griffith's major film was the notorious "The Birth of a Nation" (1915) noted for being the first major American feature film. Due to its racist content it's not a film which can ever be recommended to see.

Much more palatable was his second major film "Intolerance" (1916). It's nearly 3 hours long and consists of 4 stories from diferent historic eras. It's a very ambitious large scale film. Although very dated, for film buffs it's a must.

Summer, I think some people would have realised that the internet and www would become huge. Science fiction writers did speculate on that years before it became a reality, for instance Murray Leinster's 1946 short story called "A Logic Named Joe".

Science fiction has such a wide spectrum as it includes anything from trivial (such as anything by E E Doc Smith) to very heavyweight (such as Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker). (books)

I hope you enjoy your walk in the rain

I see that the first hymn in church this coming Sunday is "Day of Wrath and Day of Wonder". I can't remember that hymn but at least I know the music assuming it's Ar Hyd Y Nos (All Through the Night), the Welsh song. Here's Cerys Matthews singing Ar Hyd Y Nos in Welsh of course.

The direct English translation is:

All the stars' twinkles say
All through the night
"This is the way to the realm of glory,"
All through the night.
Other light is darkness
To show true beauty
The Heavenly family in peace
All through the night.
Through the night.

O, how cheerful smiles the star,
All through the night
To light its earthly sister
All through the night.
Old age is night when affliction comes
But to beautify man in his late days
We'll put our weak light together
All through the night.
Through the night.

Good morning everyone it's very windy and wet this morning. I remember very well playing La Donna e Mobile when I was learning to play the piano.

I love the words of All through the night that are usually sung very beautiful.

Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping
Hill and vale in slumber sleeping,
I my loving vigil keeping
All through the night.

While the moon her watch is keeping
All through the night
While the weary world is sleeping
All through the night
O'er they spirit gently stealing
Visions of delight revealing
Breathes a pure and holy feeling
All through the night.

Love, to thee my thoughts are turning
All through the night
All for thee my heart is yearning,
All through the night.
Though sad fate our lives may sever
Parting will not last forever,
There's a hope that leaves me never,
All through the night.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning everyone

Wet and windy here as well.

Squiggle, those words you posted to All Through the Night were written by Harold Boulton in 1884.

The music is also used for the hymn "For the Fruit of all Creation" which is most likely to be sung at Harvest Thanksgiving services.

I hope everyone has a good day
