The way I see it, Hayley was always Hayley on the inside, and was only Harold on the outside. She could never 'return' to being Harold because he never really existed. No, that's what I meant.. when her friend was dying she was talking about happy times with her husband, and Hayley didn't want to go back to a time in her life when she thought she was still 'Harold' on the outside and so unhappy.
That's how I saw it too.
