The transit can only happen when Mercury, the Sun and the Earth are in a straight line.

 

Trivial point re Mercury. Because of the speed it rotates as it's going round the Sun, each Mercurian day lasts two Mercurian years

that was really fascinating EL and  didn't realise it was happening
