Twickers, 20th July 2007 was the day it rained forever here. That was bad enough with the immediate flooding but worse was to follow. The flood waters coming down the rivers reached here by the 22nd causing widespread flooding. By the 23rd the flood waters knocked out an electricity substation affecting much of the city. My power was restored after a couple of hours but my mother was without power until the following day. I took round a kettle of just boiled water to her house so that she could have something hot to drink. By the 24th the water supply to much of the county was cut off due to the water treatment works having been submerged. We had to rely on bottled water to start with before water bowsers were set up for people to get water from. The water was eventually restored on 7th August.

Although the substation was out of action for a time, the army and volunteers were able to prevent a larger substation being submerged. It was a close thing - the flood waters reached half an inch from wiping out that substation. If they hadn't succeeded the result would have been the largest evacuation of people since the Blitz.

The elements are good El. I like them. But they can take over at times.
