I've been doing a spot of international tax advice this afternoon. Small scale stuff though. One of my clients has a son who lives in Guernsey and his wife is thinking of buying a house to let in the UK. There's little things to consider like the non-residents landlord scheme. Unless HMRC give approval, either the letting agency (if used) or otherwise the tenant has to deduct tax from the rent, pay the tax over to HMRC and the net goes to the landlord.

At present, UK properties owned by a non-resident don't get subject to capital gains tax when sold. In the budget the other week, the chancellor announced that as from April next year that will no longer be the case for residential properties.

Just the thing to keep my mind active on a Friday afternoon
