Am I the only one never to have seen a single movie - not even part of a movie in the series?

I've got no idea of the basic plot either.

Am I missing out or is it overblown nonsense?

Wot, never seen Star Wars?

Which universe you been living in Sainty?

How do you know it's nonsense if you have never seen it?

George Lucas made Star Wars as a tribute to the old cinema serials Flash Gordon (1936) and Buck Rogers (1939),
Link to the complete Flash Gordon serial (13 parts) on Youtube:

I saw the original Star Wars at the cinema when it was first released and thought it childish. Saw the other 2 films in the original trilogy on television, didn't think they were much better and haven't seen any of the later films. I wouldn't pay money to see them. But there are millions of people who think that they are the greatest films ever made.

They can be described as what is called space opera:

Personally I saw the first one at the cinema as a kid and enjoyed it although over the years subsequent viewings leave me feeling it is a bit 'hammy' and not as good as everyone seems to want you to believe.

Not seen the new one, but I'm not expecting great things as it just seems a gravy train for Disney now, we will see how much they can squeeze out of Harrison Ford et al before they can no longer/want to do it. Unless money talks or they have been killed off in the new one - which I have not seen...yet.

I note that Lucas sites this as an influence too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barsoom

The 2012 film John Carter was based on A Princess of Mars which was the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs stories of his Barsoom series.

Precisely why I left the link  although I did not explain why.

Interestingly made by Disney who now have Star Wars gravy train franchise.

Same! The others passed me by - despite some friends being very excited whenever a new one dropped i couldn't see the appeal.

However, i have watched the new one and really enjoyed it and would watch it at the cinema should it come around again!

No: my manager has "never seen Star Wars" either. It can be quite interesting as a sort of "social experiment": I asked him if he knew who Luke Skywalker's father was, and he got it right! It's an example of how that sort of cultural knowledge seeps through into the mainstream.

Having said that, I've tried the same thing on other people without success, so it would be interesting to see if any of the FMs who haven't seen the films know as well...

Well, obviously not in a galaxy far, far away...

The films didn't make much impression on me but I remember the excitement + all the tat that came out when it was released. I loved my Star Wars watch.

Also the wee boy next door was always showing off his toys  So I nicked his Hans Solo

b.t.w. That's the only thing I've ever stolen apart from when a local gang of millies [ Belfast version of scalllies]  took me under their wing + we all shoplifted an ice-lolly for a dare  Although that shop [Simpsons! Yes you! ] had rip off prices + I more than paid it back over subsequent years of their overcharging.
