1967 - when I came out of hospital - my dad drove the family to Sheffield for an Autumn holiday with my aunt and uncle who lived there. I remember as we drove into Sheffield there was a large roundabout- I think we weht round it about 3 times while he and my mum tried to work out which exit to take....and when we did take an exit it turned out to be the wrong one. so back to the roundabout we went (and I think went round it 3 times again ) and this time got the right exit and were soon at my aunt and uncle's, which wasn't far away as far as I recall.

 

Hallamshire Rise was where we were headed.

I have been on works do's and still out and about for last couple of days, but had a quick look here over coffee.

My first though is if you don't want to leave the station, there is a real ale pub just off the main concourse called the Sheffield Tap. Although I don't think they do food - it's all about their wide range of beer!

A few places...

 

I think that for the better places you will need to take a quick 10 min walk from the station or a similar tram ride.

 

 

If you were to leave the station and walk directly up the hill you will see a massive apartment complex building. This is St Pauls, there you have Café Rouge, Browns, Piccolino's, Cosmo, Pizza Express and Smoke.

 

We just had our Christmas office lunch there (it's all meat) and it was superb. I have Brisket three ways, it was delicious. Last time I had the pulled pork, again, mouth-wateringly delicious. They do a few special beers and lagers.

 

If you are going to do Smoke, call and book in advance just to be safe. Oh and book me a place too - lol

Another four minutes walk from St Paul's is Henry's. They are a local brewery owned establishment and do some nice food too. I particularly like their Lamb and mint burger and also their chicken and bacon burger. Most of the meat is locally sourced so they tell us. Wide range of beers too.

Another three mins walk up the road from Henry's is a Wetherspoon's, not one of my haunts, so I could not say what it's like. It is directly across from John Lewis.

 

There is another area in town with a large number of eateries and that place is called Leopold Square. They have Italian, Spanish (tapas), Indian and Japanese/Chinese. Very well placed for the tram.

I spend a fair amount of time in Leopold Square as it has a good relaxed yet fun atmosphere.

 

All the places I have mentioned are well within a walk from the train station or a few tram stops.

 

I did not want to take you too far out of your way as I thought it best to keep you within a reasonable walk of the station or a tram ride.

Yes! Thank you. I think last time we were in west street and orchard square, so I know roughly where lies Leopold Sq. I hadn't realised the station was that distance away for we had parked up at the team terminus near Hillsborough and teamed it down. I suspect that we will eat at Waggamama and I may have a glass of beer on the station.

Looks like a good plan you have there. A beer at the station means not far to the train. The last time I was there I had a black lager !!!  which was knocked over me.

Yo! For some unknown reason whilst you were able to follow me on FB I couldn't access this Forum.
On arrival at Sheffield midland it was raining and the famous Sheffield Tap was very much to our liking. Thus we didn't venture into the city.
Later we discovered the old number seven in Barnsler..
A great day out, great game, huge following, marvellous atmosphere. Happy days! Thanks for the advice EC!
