He doesn't want a western state in his back yard. If Ukraine goes totally NATO, EC, fizzy pop and Trans fat, then he needs a buffer zone!

It seems Putin is ashamed of it and is now putting things into reverse.
It's a difficult one and I wouldn't like to guess how this one will pan out. I'm not sure how the west would deal with this type of situation.
For example and let's take a random country in the Americas, if Chile say, tomorrow democratically elected a socialist government, would the west respect their decision?
